If the mother is pecking at the new chick, it means she wants to raise another brood. I have seen the mother literally shove the almost mature chicks out of the nest because of this. The father continued to feed them. They turned out ok.
It is never a good idea to leave the new keets in the cage if you plan on having the mother raise a new brood. The mother and father will attack them in order to protect the new clutch.
If you don't plan on breeding her again, then it is okay to leave the new keets with the parents. I have never experienced the mother or father killing their children when not breeding. Is it necessary to separate a 5-week old parakeet from its parents? Can they live together in the same cage?
You're welcome and thank you.

This just happened to my 20 day old cockatiel. The parents started pushing him out of the nest and started plucking his little feathers out. Already they are mating and working on a new nest. I took the baby out and am taking care of him. I have a brooder with another baby that is crippled I am caring for.
If the birds get the taste of the baby birds blood they will find it is sweet and they could start killing the new ones when they come. A friend of mine that has several cockatiels has a pair that eats the babies as soon as they are hatched. I told her to bring me the eggs I will take care of them. I don't mind the work and lack of sleep.
Take the baby out. Don't separate the father from the mother they would have a fit.
At this point, I would leave the baby with the parents. The mother may be trying to teach the baby something. If it appears she is hurting the baby, then I would put it in a separate cage. You would have to worry about inbreeding when the baby is old enough to mate, if you leave it with the father. When it is weaned, put it in it's own cage.
if the mother is pecking at the baby, then maybe you should seperate the mother from the father and baby. if you are not intrested in hand feeding, then i suggest leave the father with the baby until it eats on its own. if handfeeding, then just take the baby out and leave mom and dad together.
I never had a mother try to kill her baby but I always took them out anyways to hand feed and raise them.
yes they will try to kill them. this happened to my mom's bird.
